Our Weeding Approach

We like to approach weeding as maintenance, not as a one-time rescue mission. Our most effective weeding programs include recurring visits scheduled through the growing season so beds are maintained consistently rather than allowed to deteriorate between sporadic cleanups. During each visit, our crew hand-pulls weeds from planting beds, along edging lines, around tree rings, and in any hardscape joints where growth has appeared.

Reducing Weeds Long-Term

Pulling weeds is necessary, but it is only part of the solution. The most effective weed management strategy is reducing the conditions that allow weeds to establish in the first place. Proper mulch depth — two to three inches of fresh material — blocks light from reaching weed seeds in the soil and dramatically reduces germination. Clean, well-maintained bed edges prevent lawn grass from invading planting areas. And consistent removal throughout the season prevents weeds from going to seed and replenishing the seed bank for next year.

We also offer pre-emergent applications for planting beds where the client wants an additional layer of weed suppression. These products create a barrier in the top layer of soil that prevents weed seeds from germinating — essentially shutting down the annual weed crop before it starts. Pre-emergent applications are most effective when timed correctly in early spring and again in early summer, and they work best in beds that have been cleaned of existing weeds and freshly mulched.
